Swimming Service
We provide swimming for pupils in Key Stage 2 to fulfil the statutory requirements of the Physical Education National Curriculum 2000. We offer a fully rounded service to our schools which encompasses the following elements.
- A minimum of one year (three terms) of swimming for pupils in Key Stage 2 (preferably years 4 and 5).We also advise that the three terms run consecutively to ensure continuity and progression.
- Sufficient pool space for up to 40 pupils per lesson (60 pupils at Dewsbury and Spenborough pools).
- Qualified swimming instructors in a ratio of 1:20 pupils. All instructors undergo a minimum of 3 days per year of continuing professional development. In addition they train regularly (at least once per term) to ensure their life-saving skills are kept up to date.
- An annual induction course for all school staff who accompany children to the pool to ensure they are fully aware of safety policy and procedures.
- Transport (as appropriate) to and from the pool. Coaches are all provided with sufficient seats and seat belts for all pupils and accompanying staff.
- Certificates for all pupils indicating their achievement during the year.
- Whenever possible, instructors also work in schools to deliver water safety lessons.
- When pools are closed every effort is made to offer alternative arrangements at no extra cost to schools. This may take the form of instructors working alongside teachers in school.
- End of year ‘Festival of Swimming’ galas held either at Huddersfield Sports Centre or Spenborough Swimming Pool. Certificates and medals are also provided at these events.
- Where possible after school clubs for pupils unable to swim.
As part of our service commitment, we can offer the following benefits:
- transport costs are arranged centrally for all schools, allowing us to keep prices lower than if each school arranged their own transport
- pool times are block-booked with venues to ensure school space and consistency for pupils
- the service is quality assured through ongoing training and monitoring and all staff are expected to reach and maintain a required standard
- advice and support on all aspects swimming, for example, safety requirements
- a service tailored to each individual school’s needs
- monitoring of teachers and learning takes place to ensure it fulfils National Curriculum requirements.
